"More to Love" & Fat Men

Posted by shryve at 08:47 AM on September 24, 2009

In the end I think that the show "More to Love" will be a lot more damaging to Fat Men than Fat Women.

Scanning the Fat-o-sphere I am already seeing the comments pile up about how much easier the lives of Fat Men are than Fat Men. Fat Men have never has much of a presence in Fat Acceptance and here comes another topic full of comments to turn them off from Fat Acceptance.

Comments like that (re: who has it harder?) have piled up around the net well before the show was ever aired. My feeling is that we do need you guys to tell your side of the story, too.
I don't believe that More to Love was all that fat-positive to begin with. Note how many times the women said something like, "He likes me IN SPITE OF my looks.". That made me cringe.
In articles on fatness that you see in more mainstream online media, the comments appear to be more anti-woman (when a gender is specified) than anti-man. If you have a different take on that, I'd love to hear it.

Hi Mulberry

I will be the first to say that Fat Women get most of the "up front" Fat Bias from Society. Some people in Fat seem to take that fact and assume that Fat Men are far more accepted than Fat Women.

The truth is that Society has little to say about Fat Men compared to Fat Women, but what is out there is not positive. Also most of what is positive that is said about men by Society does not describe Fat Men smile
